fertilize your lawn

Everyone dreams of a green, lush lawn – the perfect yard to set off your home. But as every homeowner knows, achieving that look takes a lot of work and dedication.

We’ve put together five easy steps that you can follow to ensure your lawn looks its absolute best. From choosing the right fertilizer to when to fertilize, our hand guide will set you up for success.

Read on for how to fertilize your lawn in five easy steps.

1. Choose the Right Fertilizer

What is the best way to fertilize your lawn? It all begins with choosing the right fertilizer for your soil. A soil test can help you to determine which nutrients your soil is deficient in.

Fertilizers have an N-P-K rating on them. This tells you the level of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in the bag. Nitrogen is the key to a lush, green lawn.

Potassium helps plants to thrive and resist disease, and phosphorus helps with root growth. Most fertilizers on the market contain these three nutrients. They also include other micronutrients and inert material.

2. Get the Timing Right

When thinking about when to fertilize your lawn, consider the type of fertilizer you’re using. If you want to use an organic fertilizer, which is the natural way to fertilize your lawn, you will need to start in the fall.

Organic fertilizers use natural materials such as bone and manure. This is not immediately available to the grass when applied.

If you apply a natural treatment during the fall, it will be available to the grass by the following spring. Synthetic fertilizers are water-soluble and work more quickly. They make good treatments throughout the spring and summer.

You should plan to start your lawn feeding program in early spring, once to soil temperature hits 55°. Then continue every 4-6 weeks throughout summer, until October.

3. Choose the Right Equipment

Can you overfertilize your lawn? Yes, if you don’t choose the right equipment.

A sprayer may look great and get the job done quickly. The fact is though unless you’re a pro, it’s easy to overfertilize with a sprayer. On the other hand, using fertilizer granules in a spreader is a much easier and safer option.

4. Stick to a Schedule

Depending on your fertilizer and watering schedule, you’ll need to fertilize around every 4-6 weeks.

The Frisco Weather Station and other local bodies monitor local weather conditions. They can advise you on how to set your sprinklers to water your lawn correctly.

5. Choose a Lawn Treatment Company

There’s a lot involved in fertilizing your lawn the right way. If you don’t feel following these steps will fit in with your busy life, you have options. A lawn treatment company will gladly do the hard work for you!
